Plantation shutters in a living room

Should My San Jose Home Utilize an Inside Shutter Mount or Outside Shutter Mount?

February 27, 2020

At your shutter consultation, you’ll need to decide how your plantation shutters are installed. You could opt for an inside mount, which sits right inside the window recess. Or you can install an outside mount, where your shutter frame is secured outside the window ingress and is covered by decorative trim.

Many times the choice of an inside mount or outside mount is determined by your window type. But sometimes the choice is yours to match your design scheme. So, when should you install an inside or an outside mount?

When You Should Utilize an Inside Mount in Your San Jose Home

Inside Shutter Mount Style

As the name suggests, an inside shutter mount is affixed on the inside of the window panel. Inside mounted shutters work with either a Z-Frame or an L-Frame. The Z-Frame is secured inside the frame but has a bit of a lip around the window that makes a neat, polished look. An L-frame lies flush to the wall, without any extra finishing trim.

If your window can handle an inside mount, the choice for this type of frame is mostly cosmetic. However, windows that don’t have fairly square corners may want to stay with with a Z-frame. The overhang on a Z-frame will cover the window’s imperfections. The Z-frame is also nice for windows that have a tilt functionality. L-frames function best if your window already has decorative trim or you want to keep a minimalist look for your window.

When You Should Use An Outside Mount in Your San Jose Home

Outside Shutter Mount Style

An outside mount attaches onto the wall and drapes over the window frame and not within it. The mounts are in an L-frame and comes with its own trim, so the shutter’s fixtures will still be stylishly secluded. The shutters operate just like they should with an inside mount, and because of the trim, your guests won’t even notice the difference.

If your windows are hollow and lack a firm frame, you will have to utilize an outside mount. They also are nice when you need additional decorative trim surrounding the window to help it pop a little more. Many specialty windows with custom window frames, like arches or ovals, will need an outside mount, as will plantation shutters for french and patio doors.
