What To Expect At Your San Jose In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

To help you decide on the best window covering for your house, some companies, like Sunburst, start out with an in-home consultation. By taking samples to you, we can present how different shutters, blinds, and shades would work in your room. This conversation helps you understand your options and helps you feel satisfied with your decision.

But what exactly happens during an in-home consultation? And how can showing you different products at your home enable you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Different companies may have different procedures for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will find during your Sunburst visit.

Detailing A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

People choosing between samples of window treatments.

Begin by arranging an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make sure to show you different options for your preferred product. We will also offer additional treatments, so you can feel confident that your choice matches your ideal.

When we arrive, we’ll sit down and discuss what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency preferences, and we’ll discuss hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your representative will also ask about how the room is used and what ambiance you want to acheive. We want to achieve your final vision, so the more you can explain, the better.

We might show you many different samples and measure each style against each other. Most customers want to try out a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the perfect stain to match the walls. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once a decision is made, we’ll find precise measurements of your windows. We usually measure the windows in each room—even if you only want to make a purchase for select rooms. We get multiple measurements because most of our clients ask to be able to order additional window treatments quickly. At the end of the appointment, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will carry out professional in-home consultation, there are some actions you should never witness from any window treatment rep. As they say, the quality of your sales representative mirrors the quality of the product.

First, your consultant should be careful and professional. He or she should come to your house on time, with all samples requested, and offer to protect your floors with shoe booties. Your rep should always bring product and company literature and pricing details.

When discussing pricing, you should always get a full written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, scribbled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And always reject a quote if they won’t measure your windows. You want to know how much product and installation should cost. Be sure to to look at references and online reviews.
